Best Answer: In my experience VG-1 holds a better edge than AUS 8, but is also more difficult to sharpen. Overall I would say that VG-1 is the tougher, stronger and sharper steel.

I'd have to assume that, at least in their estimation, VG-1 is better than AUS-8 steels. They just moved the Zytel models *up* to AUS-8A from an AUS-6 variant, so it wouldn't make sense to move the premium models to an inferior steel.
